Our Mission

At MYAN we recognise that young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds have specific needs and strengths – as a result we need to work differently with them. Our mission is to connect these young people to the decision-making processes in this country.

We support young people to develop skills, knowledge and networks so they can create change in their communities.

We advocate to strengthen young people’s knowledge and leadership skills to become active citizens in Australian society.

We collaborate so young people have a network of support systems around them.

We work hard to advocate and support policy decisions that benefit young people from diverse backgrounds.

At MYAN we believe we are only as good as the collective of young people who work with us. We are a trusted voice in the community and sector because we give space for young people to be their own advocates and be leaders in the same settings in which we participate.

“Young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds are connected to decision making processes, so they become empowered and influential active citizens in Australia.”

What we do

We are a state-wide multicultural youth specialist service. We work to provide support and expertise to ensure young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds are able to build the skills, knowledge and networks they need to be active citizens in Australian society.

We work closely with academics, policy makers, youth leaders and practitioners to build meaningful connections and further develop resources that support young people.

MYAN works in partnership with young people, government, and civil society to promote the rights and interests of young people from refugee and migrant backgrounds to ensure they are recognised in policy and practice.

Our unique approach means at MYAN, we build networks. We connect people who have recently arrived to the country to established networks of young people.

We work with young people in a way that honours their culture, experiences and heritage.

We focus on youth programs, sector capacity building and influencing public policy.

Through these streams we promote the needs and interests of young people from migrant and refugee backgrounds and the sector by:

  • Settlement support and casework for young people from refugee and migrant communities
  • Leadership and skill building for young people from multicultural backgrounds
  • Supporting and resourcing the sector
  • Developing policy papers
  • Supporting organisations to work better with multicultural youth

What We Value

We strongly believe that how we work is as important as what we do and that MYAN’s ways of working embodies our values.

MYAN NSW’s ways of working:

Youth Participation

We facilitate opportunities for young people to exercise their right to fully participate in the decision-making processes that affect and shape their lives.

Challenging the status quo

We are always looking for new and better ways of working. We do this through valuing learning, reflective practice and taking risks.

Collaboration

We work with young people as partners, in a way that honours their culture, experiences and heritage. We work with our sector to draw on the collective experience of practitioners and believe we are always stronger together.

Social justice

We pursue social justice by maintaining a focus on equity, inclusion and cultural accountability.

Diversity in all its forms

We recognise that diversity is our strength and integral to our success.
